My name is Melody Slothower and I love to teach. My students give me energy and inspiration to keep learning. The combination of creating relevant curriculum, teaching to different learning styles, and the interaction with my students gives me joy.
I received my undergraduate degree from Oregon State University (liberal studies + Spanish), my graduate degree from Willamette University (Master’s in Education) and a TESOL certification for teaching English as a second (or third) language. My teaching background is varied and rich. As a full time ESL instructor at INTO OSU (Oregon State University), I developed and taught a wide variety of English and subject matter curricula to international students from beginners to advanced. Collaborating with another professor at OSU, I enjoyed teaching cross cultural communication classes and helping international students to better understand American culture and develop meaningful friendships with American students.
Previous to my assignment at Oregon State University, I taught English, U.S. history, American government and economics in both traditional (Santiam Christian High School) and alternative high schools (Morrison Campus/Dallas High School). My Oregon teaching license is current for Middle School and High School and I have endorsements in English and social studies.
My husband and I have hosted international students for the past 25 years-here in Corvallis as well as in Bozeman, Montana. We have hosted students from China, Oman, Japan, South Korea, Romania, France, Germany, Botswana and many other interesting places. We enjoy spending evenings sitting around the table sharing our life experiences, beliefs, cultural perspectives….and being parents to students far from home .
When I am not teaching, I like to wander to far away places with fellow traveler and love of my life, Ben. Favorite go to place: high in the Alps in France and Switzerland. And when I’m not speaking English….j’aime bien parler le français.
